Many believe that genes can be the main or only reasons for diseases. But many scientists agree that diseases are probably caused by both, which is called the gene-environment interaction. Children are more prone to diseases, but luckily there are ways to help avoid possible problems that may occur for the child, even later in their lives, that are caused by how they interact in the environment when they are young. The protective bodily systems that filter pollutants from the air are not fully functional in children. They also breathe, drink, and eat more than adults relative to their size and often put things in their mouths or play on the ground. Although many facts are hard to avoid, we can come together to help children in small ways to have an overall healthier life.
Before the baby is even born, there are several ways for the mother to avoid future problems. The obvious ways that most people know are to avoid smoking or drinking and be active while being pregnant. According to NIEHS research, when pregnant women have good nutrition and reduce exposure to environmental chemicals, their babies are healthier and better at coping with environmental stressors later in life. They should also be aware of their family health history, and find the best ways to help avoid any health issues depending on that family history.
Once the children are born, there are ways for the parent to monitor possible risk factors. Teaching children not to put things in their mouths and placing mats down when children are playing on a floor can both be very effective in present and future health issues a child may face. Make sure to not overfeed or underfeed your children, and check in with their doctor on the recommended nutrition plan. Even without following these tips, routine check-ups can catch any health issues with the child as soon as possible.
